30 years of Dampflokfreunde Salzwedel e.V. - Memories

With today's picture from 5 May 2024, we provisionally close the picture arch from our club history. We would like to thank our visitors, friends and supporters for the years together and hope for a good future. Perhaps as a symbol of good cooperation with new friends, we present here a picture of 01 1104, 01 531 and 44 0093, which visited us on the occasion of our anniversary event 30 years of Dampflokfreunde Salzwedel. We will of course continue to report on current developments here and look forward to many exciting stories.

On 11 January 2016, we dismantled the turntable in Parchim with the help of a friendly company from Salzwedel. Not so that it could be turned into scrap metal. Rather, we were able to acquire the devices at the time in order to obtain a suitable turntable with a diameter of 20 metres for the planned reconstruction of locomotive shed 1 in Wittenberge. The parts of the turntable are now in storage in Wittenberge.

13 October 2012 was certainly one of the most important days in the history of our association. We transferred some of our large steam locomotives from Salzwedel via Stendal to Wittenberge. The following picture shows the train consisting of some of our class 50 steam locomotives, with the wagons of the so-called disaster train in between, which provided the necessary braking effect for the train. The locomotive was 221 106 of the Potsdam railway company, which has since been sold.

On 15 October 2011, a steam locomotive was turned on the newly refurbished turntable in Wittenberge for the first time in 15 years. It was steam locomotive 91 134, which had hauled a special train from Schwerin to Wittenberge and back. It was the forerunner of our steam locomotives that moved into the Wittenberge engine shed in 2012.

30 years of Dampflokfreunde Salzwedel - Memories

Dear railway friends,

On May 4th and 5th, 2024 we will celebrate our 30th anniversary, the Salzwedel Steam Locomotive Friends, with you. In order to review these 30 years in pictures, we will take a little journey through time with today's monthly picture. We will surprise you with a new picture every Monday until the festival.

On 29 December 1994, 219 004 of Deutsche Bahn AG stood ready in the Salzwedel depot to haul passenger trains on the lines in the Altmark. The steam locomotives of the Dampflokfreunde Salzwedel (on the right) had been transferred to Salzwedel from the scap yard in Meyenburg almost two years earlier and were waiting to be refurbished.

The days are noticeably getting longer again, but the sun still remains shrouded in fog on some days.
This is also the case at Wittenberge depot. However, here the Press steam locomotive 86 1333-3 is shrouded in its own fog, creating this atmospheric scene in the engine shed.

A big thank you goes to Henry Wagner for this great photo! And also to exPresszugreisen!

You can find more information about the vehicles and journeys of the Press at

We found this picture online:
Our current club locomotive was in service with the Deutsche Reichsbahn at the time.
According to Mr M. Kwitniewski, he took this picture near Aschersleben in 1978/79.
We came across this picture through Julian Gier, who took over the pictures and the photographer's archive.
You can find several pictures from the old days on his Instagram page @steampower.ac.
A big thank you to Julian and Mr Kwitniewski for this.
We wish you, dear readers, a wonderful Advent season

We can do not only steam locomotives, but also diesel.
Currently, our V 100 is undergoing the main inspection for its commission on the rail network in Germany.
We report at regular intervals on the current progress of the 114 774-3.
In August 2020 it was available as a photo opportunity for a small group of railway enthusiasts on our premises.

Why not visit us in September on the following dates?
- Open Day at the EGP (Potsdam Railway Company) on 09.09.2023
- Day of the open monument in the locomotive shed on 10.09.2023
- Day of the rail in the locomotive shed on 16.09.2023
and enquire about our museum and our vehicles. You will always be well advised and fed.

The two former Bundesbahn locomotives next to our dispatcher building are quite untypical for the Wittenberge depot.
V 320 001 was exhibited in working order for the first time at the summer festival on 8 and 9 July.
In the evening, during a short photo session, the 221 145-6 of the EGP joined the mighty diesel.

At the beginning of June, the good news spread in the locomotive shed that with the 118 748-3 we can once again present a locomotive in our stock that is ready to run.
From now on, the V 180 can be seen and experienced in operation at our events.
She immediately joined her sister 118 692-3.
On 8.7 and 9.7.2023 it will be in operation for the summer steam at the Wittenberge depot.

Men and machines come to rest!
The lights are still on in a small railway station in the middle of the Prignitz, where people are still sitting comfortably with a drink and a grilled sausage and evaluating the spring festival.
Thanks to Stefan Weiß "Stefan24" for this night shot.
We look forward to welcoming you regularly to the Historic Engine Shed Wittenberge.

Exactly 10 years ago, express steam locomotive 03 1010 visited us on its way to Halle to replenish its water supply. The locomotive was built in 1941 and was last used at the Reichsbahn-Versuchsanstalt Halle before it was added to the stock of the Deutsche Bahn Transport Museum. It was operational until 2019.

The days are getting longer again. The birds are singing. Spring is just around the corner. As a little foretaste of this year's spring event, let's take a look back at last year. At that time's photo hour, some steam locomotives from the Wittenberge railway station were brought back to life and were under steam, almost like in the days of the Reichsbahn.

Happy BIRTHDAY, old girl!
Our locomotive 50 3570-4 has turned 80 years old.
It was built in 1942 by Henschel in Kassel and delivered to the Deutsche Reichsbahn on 21 May 1942 as 50 2308.
In 1959, the locomotive received a new boiler with a mixing preheater, a new induced draught system and a larger heating surface as part of the reconstruction programme of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (GDR). This gave the engine more power.
The Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk Stendal took over this reconstruction and from then on it bore the number 50 3570 and was now a Reko 50.
In 1970, due to the introduction of the EDP designation, the locomotive was renamed 50 3570-4.
From 1983, it ran services for the Wittenberge depot, was decommissioned in 1987 and retired in 1993.
It was bought in 1993 by Herrman Wiebe, a track-laying contractor and railway enthusiast, and underwent a visual overhaul.
In 2003, it was handed over to the Dampflokfreunde Salzwedel, and the club gradually restored it to working order.
Since 2009, the locomotive has been in working order again and can be seen by our guests and photo enthusiasts, despite its advanced age.
When the Dampflokfreunde Salzwedel moved into the museum in Wittenberge in 2012, the Reko 50 also came home again.
One of our locomotive drivers gave her a dignified wreath for her 80th birthday.
All the best and have a good trip!

Our two shunting locomotives of the type V 22 B are shown in front of the administration building.
In blue, locomotive 4 of the VEB Märkische Ölwerke Wittenberge and very fresh in orange 102 076-7 of the Bw Wittenberge.
Both locomotives found a new home here in July 2014.
Two club members acquired them from the pulp mill in Arneburg, near Stendal.
They have been refurbished and are in regular use.

The grey days are slowly disappearing and becoming longer and sunnier.
We at the Wittenberge depot are also looking forward to a beautiful spring in the coming month.

Since we did not have the opportunity to present our locomotives until Whitsun, we still have some hard-working "workhorses" that do their job outside of opening hours.
We would like to dedicate this month's picture to two of our small shunting locomotives. They do their job and are always ready for action.

The two steam locomotives 50 3570 and 35 1097 met in October 2019 for our autumn festival in this picture. The guest locomotive of the association "IG Traditionslok 58 3047 e.V." from Glauchau arrived on Sunday, 13.10.2019, with a special train from Wismar. Shortly after this encounter, the train left the museum and brought its passengers safely home.

The golden morning sun brings our locomotives out of hibernation. Here, 114 774-3 is being "kissed awake".
We wish you, dear railway friends, a nice start into spring and a happy Easter.
