04.02.2024: News from Wittenberge

The year has started again for us, too, after most of the active team took a few days off at the beginning of January. Most of our locomotives are currently in hibernation and so we were able to devote ourselves to a few other tasks.
It seems quite untypical for a railway museum that we had a lot of wood to split. This is needed to fire up our steam locomotives during the season. In winter, we also use it to fire the stove in the signal box. Fortunately, we now have a tractor with which we can operate a wood splitter. And so the sunshine of the past weekend was used to saw the remaining tree trunks into slices with chainsaws and then split them.


We also continued to work on the interior of coach 197 805, whose roof and walls had been given new interior panelling last year, which was now painted white. Once the paint had dried, we were able to start fitting the wooden mouldings to cover the gaps between the panels.



And then there was also a shunting task. A wagon that had previously been in our workshop had to swap places with one of our sleeping cars that urgently needed a repair to its body. Here - typical for this type of carriage - the sheet metal above an entrance door had rusted through and the water had already made its way to the floor.
