The frame visible in the picture last served as part of the sanding plant for locomotives. These always carry a supply of sand for spreading in front of the wheels on the rails when it is necessary to improve the adhesion between wheel and rail. This can be needed in slippery conditions to prevent the powered wheels slipping when accelerating or locking up when braking. On delivery, the sand was dried in the little hut behind on the left so that it would not form lumps when used in locomotives and block their sand fall-pipes and the spreader jets.
